Why did you apply for the Godolphin Flying Start scholarship back in 2023?
The life-changing opportunity to advance my career, travel the world, and work towards my goal
of becoming a Group 1 winning trainer. Many Kiwis have had the same opportunity, and the
success they’ve achieved after completing the course inspired me to follow in their footsteps.
Who has had the most influence on you since you commenced the programme?
There are countless people to whom I am indebted to. Being part of the 21st intake has
allowed me to benefit from an unparalleled alumni network. The connections you can forge with
these individuals across different countries are invaluable. Among the more than 200 graduates
are notable names such as Vicky Leonard, Michael Smith, Dane Robinson, Stu Hampson, Gerry
Duffy, Andy Williams, Darren Fox, Conrad Bandoroff, Todd Pollard, Henry Field, Adrian Bott, Arvin
Chadee, Brianne Sharp, Charlie King, Liam Cunningham, and David O’Farrell. Matt Houldsworth
has been a constant influence on me throughout the whole program. I was fortunate to be placed
with Matt at Goffs, from then I have been lucky enough to work a number of sales with him.
What did you learn from your externships?
I spent over a month working with Todd Pletcher, learning the value of creating and committing to a system. Assistant
trainer and graduate Stu Hampson taught me that success is built on dedication, not complexity. The externship also
provided insights into preparing horses for dirt tracks and the exceptional care given to American racehorses. Spending six
weeks with Magic Millions leading up to their January Sale provided a remarkable experience. Under the leadership of Barry
Bowditch, I saw that Magic Millions is so much more than just a horse auction. The team’s success is a true reflection of their
outstanding culture and leadership.
What did you miss about home when you travelled around the world for two years?
Friends, family, and Karaka.
What is the next step for you?
My ultimate goal is to become a trainer, but the journey to get there is still unfolding. In an ideal scenario, I would gain
experience working under a trainer in Australia, though I’m open to exploring different pathways to achieve this ambition
and acknowledge that I have plenty left to learn.
