Why did you apply for the Godolphin Flying Start scholarship back in 2023?
I was fortunate to know early on that I wanted to apply for the course, having been involved in the
industry all my life. It offers unmatched global exposure in a short time, along with invaluable
industry contacts. Learning from top professionals was another key draw, and the program has
delivered all this and more over two years.
Who has had the most influence on you since you commenced the programme?
Over the past two years, many people have helped me, and I’m deeply grateful. The
programme has expanded my global network, and the support from its alumni has been
invaluable. The relationships I’ve built will be crucial throughout my career, and I look
forward to strengthening them in the years ahead.
What did you learn from your externships?
Externships are a key part of the programme, providing hands-on experience in areas of interest. In the U.S., I was placed
with Christophe Clement at Belmont, gaining insight into American training and New York racing. A highlight was attending
the Belmont Stakes at Saratoga. In the Southern Hemisphere, I joined New Zealand Bloodstock, working across sales,
finance, marketing, insurance, and air freight, with a focus on bloodstock. Attending the Ready to Run Sale and yearling
parades gave me a deep understanding of sales operations. The connections I made will be invaluable in my career.
What did you miss about home when you travelled around the world for two years?
I have never been someone to mind being away from home, but I’d be lying if I didn’t say I missed the occasionally home
cooked meal, especially with my limitations in the kitchen. I’m looking forward to catching up with friends and family when
I get back along with being able to watch the racing at a reasonable time after being on the other side of the world for a
while!
What is the next step for you?
Long-term, I hope to work in bloodstock portfolio management or syndication. I also have a strong interest in the sport’s
governance/ administration and how it compares globally with other jurisdictions and sports. There’s no single path to
these goals, so I aim to keep broadening my knowledge and experience. While I’d like to eventually base myself in the UK,
I’m open to working abroad in-between. Now is the time to expand my international network, and I look forward to taking
the next steps in my career.
