Why did you apply for the Godolphin Flying Start scholarship back in 2023?
I applied to the programme because I recognised it as a unique opportunity to gain experiences and
insights into this industry that would have otherwise been out of reach. Over the past 18 months, I
have had the privilege of learning from industry leaders and world-class organisations across six
different countries.. This journey has broadened my perspective, deepened my understanding of the
global thoroughbred industry and equipped me with invaluable skills for the future.
Who has had the most influence on you since you commenced the programme?
I’ve been fortunate to benefit from the guidance and success of past graduates who have
progressed to the highest levels within the industry. Among them, Gerry Duffy has been particularly
influential as a role model and mentor. He is a consummate professional, who leads by example and
has been very generous with his time and insights. Tony Lacy and James Ross have also been
instrumental in shaping my professional approach.
What did you learn from your externships?
My externships were invaluable learning experiences. At Keeneland, Tony Lacy taught me a key principle: we work in a
people-driven industry, not just a horse industry. Tony stressed the importance of cultivating strong relationships with
clients and getting to know them on a personal level. Client service and trust were also paramount. With the Hong Kong
Jockey Club, I gained insights into the administrative side of the industry, including operations, strategy, wagering,
integrity, handicapping and business development. Working with James Ross and observing Hong Kong’s racing model,
commonly regarded as the pinnacle of global jurisdictions, allowed me to see best-in-class practices in action.
What did you miss about home when you travelled around the world for two years?
The second / third week of March, also known as the Cheltenham Festival!
What is the next step for you?
My next step is to continue travelling while building on the connections I’ve fostered over the past 18 months. I am
particularly interested in potential opportunities in the US or the Middle East. My goal is to secure a business development
or international relations role within the Racing and Bloodstock industry, where I can utilise my global experience and
industry knowledge to drive growth and innovation. Ultimately, I want to play a role in bridging international markets and
strengthening key connections across the industry.
