Matthew Daubeney

What horse got you interested in the Thoroughbred industry?

Apple’s Jade – I absolutely loved her on the track, and her 2019 Irish Champion Hurdle is one of my favourite performances of all time. Honourable mention to Sea the Stars too!

Why did you apply for the Godolphin Flying Start scholarship?

The scholarship presents a truly unique opportunity to experience the Thoroughbred industry in its entirety across the globe, with 12 like-minded people, working with industry-leading figures. I applied for the programme as I feel the extensive training and exposure received in all facets of the industry will set me up to be an asset in whichever role within the sport I pursue. I wish to one day be an individual who makes a lasting positive impact on our industry and the Thoroughbred horse, and the Godolphin Flying Start scholarship is an excellent place to begin this journey.

Have you any siblings?

I have an older sister, Gemma who is a journalist, sadly not involved in the Thoroughbred industry but I am trying to convince her to report on racing; she’d be brilliant!

What are your hobbies and interests?

I am a general sports fan, watching everything and anything I can. I used to play a lot of hockey and cricket, but golf is definitely my favourite hobby now.

What did you think you will miss most about home while you travel through each of the five phases?

All the local beaches and the sea at home in Jersey, the local golf club, La Moye, and Les Landes Racecourse.
