INTERNATIONAL experience has clinched Liam Howley the role as Lloyd Williams’ head trainer at Macedon Lodge.
Howley, who worked in the UK for Darley, will take over from Robert Hickmott after Saturday’s Zipping Classic meeting at Sandown.
Six-time Melbourne Cup-winning owner Williams said the time was right for Hickmott to branch out on his own after eight years in charge.
“It’s a good move for Robert before it is too late,” Williams said. “Liam has been here for more than six years and has the international experience that suits our operation.”Hickmott has prepared two Melbourne Cup winners for Williams — Green Moon and Almandin.
He will saddle-up Almandin, Assign and import The Taj Mahal in the Zipping Classic.
Howley previously worked with Lee Freedman and Robert Smerdon.
He is a graduate of the Darley Flying Start program and worked with Angus Gold at the Shadwell Racing Office in England.
