Horsemanship Competency Criteria


Please complete ONE of the five options below and create a video demonstrating your horsemanship skills

Important

  • You must be identifiable in the footage provided for example, your face should be recognisable
  • You must wear the correct PPE (personal protective equipment) for the task
  • You must carry out the task in a safe, suitable environment.
  • The video can be edited but must be no longer than 3 minutes

1) Riding

Achieve the minimum riding standard on a quiet horse in an enclosed area

Video clearly showing

  • Tack up with bridle and saddle safely and efficiently
  • Maintain a correct, balanced and secure position in the saddle
  • Walk, trot and canter, demonstrating smooth transitions
  • Control your horse in straight lines and circles

                                                  OR

Provide clear recent video footage* of yourself exceeding the minimum riding standard:

  • Race or exercise riding a thoroughbred
  • Show-jumping
  • Eventing

*You must be identifiable in the footage provided for example your face should be recognisable or if you submit race footage you can include a screenshot of the race card with your name and horse ridden.

 

2)Tack up and lunge a horse

  • Tack up with breaking tack correctly, safely and efficiently
  • Maintain control of the horse throughout
  • Work the horse safely on the lunge in walk and trot

3)Tack up and put horse on walker

  • Tack up with exercise (racing or general) tack correctly, safely and efficiently
  • Maintain control of the horse
  • Safely put the horse on the walker and turn it on
  • Safely turn off the walker and take the horse off

4)Groom and present a mare, yearling or foal for inspection.

  • Professionally groom the horse
  • Maintain control of the horse
  • Show the horse as would be expected at sales standing up and walking

5)Put an outdoor rug on a horse and release the horse in a paddock/arena/lunge pen

  • Prepare the horse for the outdoors
  • Put an outdoor rug on the horse correctly, safely and efficiently
  • Maintain control of the horse throughout
  • Safely release the horse into a suitable area
