Darren Fox, Stallion Seasons Sales Manager, Darley Stallions, USA

Darren Fox is from Co. Roscommon, Ireland. Formerly employed by Horse Racing Ireland’s Tote Division, he commenced the Godolphin Flying Start program in August 2007 and graduated in July 2009. During his time on the program he completed work placements with Keeneland Bloodstock Sales, USA, trainer John O’Shea in Australia, trainers Herman Brown and Dhruba Selvaratnam in Dubai, and with Tattersalls Bloodstock Sales in the UK. Upon his graduation in 2009 Darren joined the nominations team in Darley Stallions, USA where he worked alongside Godolphin Flying Start graduates Gerry Duffy, Kate McMahon and Fabricio Buffolo. In 2013 he joined WinStar Farm in the role of Stallion Seasons Director.

Asked how the Godolphin Flying Start program has benefitted his career, Darren Says, “The Godolphin Flying Start program fast-tracked my career in the thoroughbred industry and opened many doors. It provided me with a global network of contacts which still prove invaluable today. The course allowed me to experience every facet of the industry and ultimately make a highly informed career decision upon graduation.”


Kelsey Riley, International Editor, Thoroughbred Daily News, USA

Kelsey Riley is the International Editor of the Thoroughbred Daily News, one of the industry’s leading publications. An online newsletter that is sent out to more than 11,000 subscribers daily, the TDN has readers in 180 countries. Kelsey completed a work placement with the TDN during Godolphin Flying Start, and was offered a position as Assistant Editor at the company’s USA office upon graduating. In this role, she assisted in gathering and packaging editorial content for the daily paper, including race previews and analysis, interviewing key industry figures and identifying relevant news and feature stories. After 10 months, Kelsey was promoted to International Editor, and she now oversees all content from outside North America. Her role includes the added responsibilities of overseeing staff and freelancers and planning coverage for important events. Since commencing this role, Kelsey has traveled to sales in UK, France and Australia to report for the TDN..

Asked how the Godolphin Flying Start experience has helped shape her career to date, Kelsey says, “During my time on Godolphin Flying Start, I knew that the knowledge I was gaining would be greatly beneficial in my career in the thoroughbred industry. But it was only when I started working that I realized just how great the benefits are. I draw on my experiences from Godolphin Flying Start on a daily basis in my job, and I now can’t imagine doing what I do without it..”

A number of graduates have already established themselves as licensed racehorse trainers, including Tom Morley (Tom Morley Racing) in New York and Jerome Reynier and Francis-Henri Graffard in France. Graduates are also working for bloodstock sales companies including Matt Prior (Tattersalls Bloodstock Sales), Ludovic Cornuel (Arqana) and Jian Tian  (Inglis). Ed Sackville, Tina Rau, Mick Flanagan and Alex Elliott have set up their own bloodstock agencies. In the media sector, Gina Harding is a well-known presenter on the At The Races and Channel 4 Racing, Gary King is Vice President of International Operations for Thoroughbred Daily News and Isabel Matthew works as a journalist in Paris. Andrew Birch was appointed CEO of New Zealand Thoroughbred Marketing in 2011. 2012 graduate Michael Hardy is the Manager of Margaux Farm in Lexington and 2007 graduate Gerry Duffy is General Manager of Kildangan Stud, Ireland.
